Interview Friends of IT4Kids: Okhuysen

Since 2024, Wijnkoperij Okhuysen has been a Friend of IT4Kids. The family business is structurally committed to making sports accessible for vulnerable children. We spoke with owner and managing director Xavier Kat about entrepreneurship, wine, and social impact.

Okhuysen has existed for generations and has grown into a leading wine company in the Netherlands. According to Xavier, the strength of the family business lies in its culture and long-term relationships. “Relationships with suppliers, customers, and employees are more personal and sustainable.”

Although Okhuysen now operates nationwide, its origins remain clearly visible. “Our store in Haarlem, where it all began, is still a place we are very proud of. It’s all about experience there—from tastings to courses. I consider it one of the most beautiful wine shops, with all the characteristic elements of the past.”

Quality and experience

What sets Okhuysen apart is its strong focus on quality and service. “Our mission is to let as many people as possible enjoy quality wine,” says Xavier.

While France historically forms the foundation, the assortment is now global. “From Spain and Italy to New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. The wine world is incredibly rich. That diversity and the stories behind the wine continue to fascinate.”

According to Xavier, wine is about more than just taste. “It’s truly a unique product. Between pruning the vines and the moment a bottle reaches the table, three to four years can pass. An incredible amount of craftsmanship, science, and emotion goes into that.”

Okhuysen aims to share that experience with its customers. “Our customers are usually not experts, but enthusiasts. That’s why we love to take them along in the story behind the wine, for example through tastings or our magazine. It makes wine so much more enjoyable and better tasting.”

Why IT4Kids?

“Sport has a huge impact on the physical and mental development of children. I’ve always been very active myself, practicing sports like hockey, judo, and surfing. You learn discipline, teamwork, and how to deal with setbacks, especially in team sports. I’ve made lifelong friendships through it. That’s something you wish for every child.”

Entrepreneurship with responsibility

Xavier: “As a company, you also have a social responsibility. We support various initiatives, from cultural institutions to charities.” The choice for long-term partnerships is a conscious one. “We don’t want to contribute just once. We want to be truly involved. Just like with our winemakers: investing in relationships for the long term.”

Enjoy and share

“Wine is about enjoyment and sharing.” This philosophy aligns with the mission of IT4Kids. “What IT4Kids does is make something possible for vulnerable children. That’s something we truly value contributing to.”

His message to other entrepreneurs is clear: “Take good care of the world around you – both sustainably and socially. And realize that your business can make an impact. Sometimes it may seem small, but for someone else, it can mean everything.”
